A Message from the President

Dear MSSA Members,

On Monday, December 16th myself and Executive Director Dave Smith met with Secretary Joe Gill and Fisheries Director Tom O'Connell.  As you know we requested this meeting earlier in the month with respect to the striped bass fishery, more specifically how we move forward in 2014 with respect to ASMFC and possible striped bass reductions.

After a lengthy meeting I would like to report that we are confident in the DNR's analysis of the 2013 stock assessment and we have secured a good game plan moving forward.  It is MSSA's mission to protect the recreational anglers of Maryland and the industries it supports.  We are confident in DNR's analysis, the path forward, and look forward to working with DNR through this process.

MSSA will be there every step of the way ensuring we maximize the benefit this vital resource has on our economy and way of life here in Maryland.  If you have any further questions please contact the main MSSA office at 410-255-5535 or email fish@mssa.net

Thank you again for your support and have a Happy New Year!

V/R

2013 Youth Angler of the Year

2013 marked the second year for the Youth Angler of the Year contest and with over 1,000 email entries and over 50 youth anglers competing, this year's contest was a success.

"Getting our youth on the water fishing is part of our mission, and this contest does exactly that." - Dave Smith Executive Director

This year the winner, or winners, are the Zagalsky brothers Darin (pictured top right) and Brian (pictured bottom right). Both Brian and Darin are avid anglers and show up to nearly every Youth Fishing Seminar at Alltackle in Annapolis.  Their parents are also avid anglers who's passion for the sport has clearly influenced Brian and Darin. Both ended the contest on December 15th with 1950 points apiece.  They will be recognized at the 2014 Spring Tournament Awards Party on May 8th, 2014.

Second and third place also went to siblings, Jacob and Rachel Ehm.  Jacob took second place with 1320 points and Rachel took third with 800 points.  They too will be recognized on May 8th for their efforts.
